Born and raised in Chicago, I’ve always been curious about art in all its different expressions and forms. As a teenager, I became interested in ceramics and poetry. Ceramics to me was novel as there seemed to be no limit to how you could express yourself through it. Creative writing was always an interest of mine, but poetry—and some level of skill in producing it—didn’t come to me until I’d reached high school. By the time I reached college, I had developed a love for photography (while still finding time to write poetry on the side).

As I’m sure most people can attest, the accessibility and simplicity of smartphone photography helped me cultivate a lust for the medium, while paradoxically not providing me the accuracy or quality to be satisfied with the images I produced.

After taking a photography class in my Sophomore year at Connecticut College, I realized I could pursue the medium beyond the lens of an iPhone. As a graduation present, I was gifted a camera and began capturing everything I could while trying to discover my style as a photographer.

When I moved to New York City to pursue my Master’s Degree at Columbia University, I began experimenting more and more with said camera; exploring its capabilities and familiarizing myself with its functions. For these reasons, I think of myself as “semi-self-taught”. Likely by virtue of the city I’m in, I’ve begun to explore who I am as a photographer and what it is I want to capture.

“trés bien visuals” is a testament to my journey with photography and finally finding myself—and my mission—within that.
