Dream A Little Dream of Me

Dream a little dream of me

A land of hope and positivity

Praying for that untouched milk and honey

It’s funny

How might we define a place and time

That yet are nonexistent

Frustrated greatly at the sole existence

Of a system that praises fair skin, and black and brown submissives

Is it

Improbable or even impossible

That I may hope for the intangible

To hope that my skin would not in the white gaze define my character

To hope that race would not be a factor in your consideration of me hereafter

Label me a fool to dream of a world that’s so far out of reach

But when you raise and teach

That praise and speech

Fall on and are valued only as part of a majority

You instill in a society that those of least worth belong to a minority

Justice for all simply doesn’t apply to me

So blatant and banal these days, even the blind can see

The school to prison pipeline, a form of modern slavery

The cuffs at my wrist, your knee on my neck appear chains to me

Removed mostly from the physical

The limitations so much stronger when mental

Instilled in my history

The theory that

“White is right”

A falsehood that to this day creates divisions

Sharply cuts, an incision

The ideas of dark-skinned and light-skinned

Seeds implanted by white men

The pin that when pulled expands

A crevasse in our once unified stand

All black is beautiful

Oh how truthful

It would be

Without the separation of category

For what purpose must there be a line

When truly one of a kind we are

What use is distinction of the human race

Come face to face

With the underlying truth of the matter

I’m shattered

That you still label me as subhuman

And in your amusement

Forget that there is more than race, true history in our ethnicities

Homo sapiens, I hope you would agree these

Terms do not justify

The way you tear and vilify

In the truest sense

The issue is dense

Wrapped tightly in your story

For to the records go those with glory

The history of winners, of victory

Is there no justice for me?

I pray for days where I may raise a child who knows not discrimination

Who knows not “Liberty and justice for all” to be a lie in this nation

Simmered in a pot, black as it calls the kettle, true

Oh better world I dream a little dream of you

Deaf Ears

When I speak, and you don’t hear my voice

I’m left with no choice but to live by sword

You are not of your word

You feed lies

Try as I might to escape, imprinted and ingrained from the very beginning you’ve designed my fate

This endless cycle of hate, please tell me the date at which my people will find resolution

Resolution to overcome and overthrow the mighty and terrible tyranny we face

Oh the evil so deeply rooted in this place with their privilege they can’t seem to face

We must sever these ties at their depths

Out of respect for mothers, brothers, sisters, families who wept for the loss of one

For the loss of some

These crimes add up to a terrible sum

The deed so dark it blocks the sun

How now can we not stand injustice and face it as one?

You claim to be allies but when my brothers die, it is I who cries out

Falling on deaf ears

Untitled 01

How is it that in so short a time

Your heart and mine

Intertwine

A network of tunnels

It funnels

And boils down to your energy

The way your smile seeps into me

Radiance

To outshine the stars

A feat you’ve reached ten thousand fold

And truth be told

I’m stuck

Stuck in valleys of chocolate brown

That seem to surround the depth of your pupils

Stuck in the pull of your lips

That with every kiss take me in

The sweet sin

So right it should be wrong

Your gentle song

Leaves me in a trance

You enchant me

Your head on my chest as we sleep

Breathe

As I drink deep

Of your essence

You’re value rooted in a sense of presence

Every moment with you a gift like Christmas presents

The thrill of your touch

Even now I clutch

And hold tight to these feelings

Mystical dealings

In the way I’m under your spell

A charm

Cast not to do harm

How deep it goes, only time will tell

Power

Placed on a scale

The weight of ones body rests

In society your skin color attests

To the ability of those like you

Their descriptions cruel and spiteful

Animate their pretenses and judgment

And it seems so black, brown and white

They’re hellbent

On letting you know that you are not enough

Pious

Their bias spreads

Let not my words define me

As you dictate that my skin does so already

Expected to be less than

On both ends

Never smart enough

Simply dumber than

No use in comparison

No the world isn’t kind to them

They fight tooth and claw

To see now what others saw

Just barely reaching the pinnacle

The privileged on their pedestal

Push back and throw down

The higher we climb

They challenge your mind

The path once clear turns to maze

The tricks and cards up their sleeves

Oh and it don’t ease

Only in confusion it leaves you

Through blood sweat and tears you pull through

Tear down what is built up with your own hands

Groundbreaking, you aim for new land

The chance to leave a mark and be known

Setting up the cornerstone

For those who would follow in your footsteps

Those ready for the hardship and the trek

The effort it takes

Already raised the stakes

Push through and take your place

It takes one name to start a legacy

Yours or mine, inevitably

It’ll all go down in history
